Ripe For the Picking: Farmers Markets!

Looking for juicy field-ripened berries, freshly baked sweet and savoury pastries, artisan crafts, or a locally crafted IPA brew? Then mark your calendars for your Farmers Market opening day, and don’t miss out!

With two local farmers markets in our community, there’s every reason to be eating local this spring and summer. Pop by your local market and meet local farmers, growers, makers, and bakers who bring out their unique, quality products that you can purchase and take home.

Farmers Markets

Curious why farmers choose to sell at a community market rather than wholesale? Markets are a great opportunity for farmers and producers to enter into the consumer market without losing profit to distributors or overhead retail costs. Small vendors selling direct to consumers increase profits, which in turn creates an economic multiplier effect as the money is recycled back into the community. Consumers get produce that is fresh, straight from the farm, and products that are made with quality and care.

What might you find at a market? Our local markets have become a venue for communities to access local grown and produced foods and other goods direct from producers. Consumers can shop for fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, fresh fish, baked goods, artisan food and local craft beer, wine and spirits. You can also find locally made arts and crafts, including jewelry, paintings, photography, natural soaps and creams, clothing, wood-crafts and much more.

Not sure what to make with that vibrant swiss chard or those crisp multi-coloured carrots? Here’s a tip…ask the farmer to share their preferred recipe or preparation method and you might just discover a new favourite yourself. Farmers markets are a great way to learn about and taste new products, reduce our carbon footprint, increase our health & wellness, support entrepreneurs, and ensure the viability of farming into the future.
